Foot ulcer is a serious pathological problem caused by the simultaneous physiological activities of ischemia, neuropathy and infection in patients with type 2 diabetes. However, patients’ knowledge and attitudes about foot care are essential to avoiding foot ulcers. A cross-sectional descriptive design was implemented for the study in Najaf Health Directorate / Sadr Medical City / Najaf Diabetes and Endocrinology Center from October 20, 2021 to May 9, 2022 in order to assess the levels of knowledge and attitudes of patients with type 2 diabetes related to preventive measures for foot ulcers, a non-probability sample ( Purposeful sample) of 300 patients with type 2 diabetes who visit Al-Sadr Medical City / Najaf Diabetes and Endocrinology Center for treatment or follow-up or both in the study sample. The data collected using a well-designed questionnaire consists of four parts: The first part consists of demographic data containing (7) items. The second part consists of clinical data containing (5) items; The third part includes the knowledge of patients regarding preventive measures for foot ulcers, which includes (24) elements. The fourth part consists of patients’ attitudes towards preventive measures for foot ulcers and consists of (11) items. Data were collected by direct interview method with diabetic patients. The reliability of the questionnaire is determined by a pilot study. The authority was determined by a committee of (17) experts. Data are described statistically and analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistical analysis procedures.
The results of the study indicated that there is a positive, statistically significant relationship between the knowledge of diabetic patients and their attitudes regarding preventive measures for foot ulcers. Moreover, there is a significant correlation between patients’ knowledge and (educational status and occupation). Also, there was great knowledge of patients with (duration of illness and education about diabetes). In addition, there is a significant correlation between patients’ attitudes and (educational status and occupation), and finally, there is a significant correlation between patients’ attitudes and (treatment and smoking type).
The study concluded that patients with type 2 diabetes have moderate knowledge about preventive measures for foot ulcers and the fact that attitudes of patients with type 2 diabetes can influence preventive measures for foot ulcers moderately. There is also a strong relationship between knowledge and trends regarding preventive measures for foot ulcers.
